L-arginine
L-arginine participates in nitric-oxide production, but oral supplementation produces variable cardiovascular and exercise results.
What it is
L-arginine is an amino acid and nitric-oxide precursor. Oral arginine undergoes substantial metabolism before reaching circulation, which helps explain why citrulline and arginine are separate interventions.
What human research suggests
Meta-analyses report modest average blood-pressure reductions in some populations. Exercise-performance findings vary by dose, training status and outcome. Cardiovascular biomarker findings do not establish better training performance.

Arginine may lower blood pressure and interact with nitrates, antihypertensives and erectile-dysfunction medicines. It can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and may trigger herpes recurrences in susceptible people. People after a recent heart attack should avoid it unless a clinician directs use.
