L-tryptophan
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used in serotonin and melatonin pathways. Sleep effects depend on amount, timing, diet and the population studied.
What it is
L-tryptophan is obtained from food and used by the body to make proteins and serotonin-pathway compounds. A precursor role does not guarantee a predictable sleep effect.
What human research suggests
A 2021 meta-analysis reported improvements in selected sleep outcomes, with stronger signals in some higher-dose studies. Trials remain heterogeneous, and older reviews report mixed effects across sleep, mood and cognition.

Do not combine tryptophan with serotonergic medicines or supplements without clinical advice because serotonin toxicity is possible. It may cause drowsiness, nausea or dizziness. Pregnancy and breastfeeding data are limited.
