Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone involved in circadian timing. Study results depend heavily on when it is taken, the amount, formulation and the reason for sleep disruption.
What it is
The brain releases melatonin in response to darkness as part of the sleep-wake timing system. Supplemental melatonin changes the signal presented to that system. Immediate-release and prolonged-release formulations can behave differently.
What human research suggests
Meta-analyses report small average improvements in sleep onset, total sleep time or sleep quality in selected populations. Effects vary across primary insomnia, circadian disorders, jet lag and secondary sleep problems. A result in one condition does not establish the same benefit for every sleep complaint or for a multi-ingredient formula.
