Magnesium

Magnesium supports hundreds of enzyme reactions and normal nerve and muscle function. Sleep findings depend on baseline status, form, elemental amount and the population studied.

Evidence reviewUpdated 11 October 2026
MEssential mineral / sleep and normal function
Evidence signalMixed overall; one recent bisglycinate trial found a small effect
Research focusSleep, deficiency, muscle and nervous-system function
Key qualifierElemental magnesium—not total compound weight

What it is

Magnesium is an essential mineral. “Magnesium glycinate” describes magnesium bound to glycine, while elemental magnesium states how much magnesium the serving actually provides. Labels should be compared using the elemental amount.

What human research suggests

A 2025 randomized trial enrolled 155 adults reporting poor sleep and tested 250 mg elemental magnesium as bisglycinate for four weeks. The average between-group improvement in insomnia severity was statistically borderline and small. Broader reviews remain inconsistent. This supports careful discussion of sleep support, not a claim to treat insomnia.

SAFETY & CONTEXT

What to consider before use.

Supplemental magnesium can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. Kidney impairment can reduce magnesium clearance and raise the risk of excess. Magnesium can interfere with absorption of some antibiotics and bisphosphonates, so timing may need separation. The U.S. adult upper limit of 350 mg per day applies to supplemental magnesium, not magnesium naturally present in food, unless a clinician directs otherwise.
